Some of us listen to music... others watch TV... some folks read a magazine.
For me, it depends on the workout routine I'm completing.
Treadmill Running: I always watch TV, and will sometimes plan my run so it happens when there's a "good" show scheduled.
Outside Running: I almost always listen to music on my MP3 player. On rare occasions Hubby joins me, in which case I chat with him.
Lifting Weights: Again, I watch TV. Our gym equipment is in our basement, and we have a TV in the same room.
Karate Drills: This is the one workout where I really focus on what I'm doing. Usually the TV is on, but I don't watch it unless I need a break.
Elliptical: TV again.
So what do YOU do when you workout?

I do a lot of my exercise in a more social setting, so I'm usually chatting with someone. Otherwise I'm either watching tv or listening to my MP3 playing, depending on whether or not I'm inside.
I am always impressed when you say that you ran 5 miles on the treadmill. I HATE the treadmill and find it hard to run one mile even while watching TV or listening to music - that is one reason my workouts slow down in the winter, especially when it is
-20 outside. But now it is getting very nice and I love trail running. I can easily run for an hour outside. If I am lifiting weights I usually have the TV on.
At the gym I plug my headphones into the machine I'm on to watch TV because time passes quicker that way! I'm mostly on the treadclimber which is kind to my back. The gym music is SO LOUD ..that I struggle to HEAR the tv screen infront of me! When I'm doing resistance training (with weights) I just listen to the background music but occasionally glance at the big screen that is playing the music video that is blaring many decibels! If I don't have my headset plugged into the treadclimber for example.. I will be listening to my iPod-mini instead!
